Indy – Indian Ringneck

This sweet girl came to us a back in the summer with varying degrees of challenges. She has currently been in foster since mid August and the physical changes are simply amazing! Her diet used to consist of seeds and pieces of apple and over the course of the past few months she has decided that nutriberries are her most favorite, she enjoys a bit of banana – loves blueberries and enjoys bird mash on occasion – carrots/snow peas/lettuce and a variety of other things, her seed is now limited as is her millett as she devours that like candy.

At her first vet visit we discovered a nail issue – as she had never had them done, they had grown out quite alot and bled when trimmed – she recently went for another trim and some of them still bled – we are hoping in time and continued trims that the nails will regress more and more until its no longer an issue. While we always do our own nail/beak trims – we elected to have the vet oversee this process with her.

Her physical changes have been pretty dramatic – as she began her molt – new feathers starting popping up all over the place – the before and the after photos speak more than what I can describe.

Learning to trust is still an issue with her but her foster mom is working daily with her to help her overcome her fears and is teaching her things she never experienced before. Her entire way of life is totally different than before and while she does test boundaries on a regular basis (think naughty 2 yr old haha)she also gets closer with each day and allows a bit more of her personality to shine through.

Each day is a new adventure for her and she is so exuberant and on the go as soon as her cage door is open. She needs to investigate everything around her – and loves sticks out of all the toys shes been introduced to.

Hard to say right now if she will have a cuddly personality or not as she is still in a learning phase and it will take time for her to trust.

Indy had grown her feathers out for a short time and began overbarbering/chewing them again – she also broke most of her tail feathers off in the water bowl – she LOVES her baths!

She needs to be in a home with no cats/dogs as she cannot fly the greatest and when trying to follow you or playing exuberantly she will find herself on the floor running around. She is chalk full of energy!

She has also decided her cage is HER cage and has shown signs of aggression when you clean or refill bowls – positive reinforcement/time will help her overcome this – its a natural thing for her based on her previous lifestyle and she now wants to ensure her home is not taken away.

She can be very vocal and loud at times with her alarm calls – shared dwellings are NOT recommended for her – your neighbors would not be impressed.
